Is a Stun Gun Legal?

What laws apply to the possession and use of a stun guns?


Although stun guns have become very popular in recent years unfortunately if you wish to purchase one for your own personal protection you will need to clarify what stun gun law applies to the state where you live. In this article we will look more closely at some states and cities where they have restrictions in relation to stun guns. At present the states that have restrictions on stun guns are Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Wisconsin and the cities that also have restrictions on stun guns are Annapolis MD, Baltimore MD, Baltimore County MD, Chicago IL, Denison/Crawford County IA, District of Columbia and Philadelphia.

Where the district of Columbia is concerned it is illegal either to possess or use a stun gun and the same goes for Hawaii.

As for Massachusetts it is illegal either for a person to sell, offer for sale or posses a portable weapon or device which emits an electrical charge, impulse wave or beam and which can be used to temporarily immobilize, injure or kill another person. Certainly anyone found to be violating this particular stun gun law will be fined no less than $500 or no more than $1,000 or they could in fact find themselves being imprisoned for between 6 months and 2 years in either a jail or house of correction or even both.

Whilst in Michigan is not allowed to either sell or possess any form of stunning device include stun guns and if a person is found violating this law they are then guilt of a felony.

But in New York, Rhode Island people are banned from possessing any form of stunning devices and in Wisconsin it is illegal for a person to either sell or possess such devices and this is the same for Chicago.

Yet in Baltimore and Baltimore County you will find that it is illegal for any person, firm or corporation to sell, give away, lend/rent or transfer to any other person, firm or corporation a stun gun or other electronic device (whatever name or description it goes by) which discharges a non projectile electrical current within the limits of the City of Baltimore. Further more it is illegal for any person to either possess, fire or discharge any type of stun guns or electronic devices within the City itself. But these restrictions do no apply to any member of the Baltimore City Police Department or any other law enforcement officer whilst performing their official duties.

Above we have provided some information regarding a few of the states where there stun gun law either bans this self defense weapon completely or it is illegal to either sell or own one. But there are many other states where it is perfectly legal to be in possession of a stun gun.
